The DAD Project

The DAD Project

DAD100According to Fatherhood.org, one out of every three children in the US live in “biological father-absent” homes.

Children in father-absent homes are almost four times more likely to be poor.

71% of high school dropouts are fatherless.

85-90% of youth in juvenile detention are fatherless.

According to 72.2% of the US population, fatherlessness is the most significant family or social problem facing America. (National Center for Fathering poll)

Here is what we are doing in a small way to make an impact. Our High Impact Teen youth outreach ministry visits teens in juvenile detention centers across Tennessee, Georgia and Indiana. We spend time with youth who are disconnected from their fathers.

We visit them, we do Bible studies with them and we pray with them.

During this “Father’s Day Week” we are providing a special Father’s Day card for several hundred of these youth to send to their dad. For those who have lost all connection to their dad, they will be sending the card to a “father figure” who has deeply impacted their life such as a grandfather, teacher, pastor, coach, mentor, etc…

We are asking our friends to join us this “father’s day week” in the DAD Project. Here’s how you can help:

1. Take a moment each day from now through Sunday to pray for the fatherless among us. Pray especially for those who are sending theses cards and pray for the men who receive the to be moved to re-engage with their teen.

2. Share this page via email, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIN or any other social media platform asking your friends to commit to pray once per day through this Sunday for the fatherless. Share the photo of the DAD Project.

3. Prayerfully ask God how you might connect with a fatherless young person. James 1:27 charges believers to engage with the fatherless. Here are the specific words of Jesus, “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”

4. Consider a donation to help with this project. The ministry of High Impact Teens is a ministry to the fatherless. We are supported by individuals and churches who believe that a deep investment in the fatherless among us is a priority that Jesus called us to do.

How To Connect With God as a Father Figure

How To Connect With God as a Father Figure

*Terry doesn’t have a dad. Well, everyone has a dad but not everyone has the privilege of knowing their father. Such is the story with Terry. So the idea of feeling connected with God as a father figure comes as a little bit of a challenge. Terry is in middle school and yesterday I met him. He is spending two weeks at “Son Camp.” It’s a camp held in Whites Creek, TN just north of Nashville and it is a part of the ministry of Onnie Kirk through the Fatherhood Foundation. Onnie has a ministry to fatherless boys and “Son Camp” is part of the overall investment in these guys. Notice the name is “Son Camp” not “Fatherless Camp.”

I visited “Son Camp” this week and got to hang out with the boys and after lunch, we sat in the dining area and talked for a while. Onnie shared a story about Terry. Just a day earlier, Terry was late for a meeting there at camp. One of the rules at “Son Camp” is that you have to be on time. Terry showed up late and missed a meeting and Onnie stepped outside to talk with him about it. Onnie said, “Son, why don’t you go over to the chapel and spend a little bit of time talking to ‘The Father’ about what happened here. Ask Him what you should take away from this experience.” Terry replied, “Mr. Onnie, I’ve never heard from God before. I’ve never heard Him speak to me the way you say He speaks to you.” Onnie explained further, “Son, it’s really pretty simple. He is your Father and you can just go in to the chapel, get down on your knees and talk to Him in the same way you and I are talking right now.” So Terry did. Several minutes later Onnie saw Terry come out of the chapel and he was so excited. Onnie said, “Son, did you talk to the Father about it?” “I sure did.”, Terry replied. “And what did the Father say?”, Onnie asked. “Well… He spoke to me and He said that I need to be more responsible… and if I’m more responsible I won’t have this problem anymore.” For the first time in his life a fatherless boy heard the voice of his Father and the advice was simple, loving and profound. Maybe this is why they don’t call it “Fatherless Camp”, they call it “Son Camp.”

What’s Your Father Story?

Everyone has a “father story.” I hope your father story is a great one; full of meaningful moments, wisdom and laughter. But I realize many people live their entire life struggling with their personal father story. Some grow up with dedicated fathers, some have disconnected fathers and some were deserted by their fathers and never knew him. But here’s the great news… all of us can be graduates of “Son Camp!” When we enter into a personal relationship with God we are His sons and daughters and we claim our spot in His family. So it’s important to engage with Him and give Him the place He really deserves. When things go wrong, when we don’t know what to do and when we need wisdom, why don’t we do what Terry did and go get alone with Him for a little while and just simply ask Him to speak to us and tell us what we need to do? We really don’t need to live as orphans… because we are not.

In Proverbs 1:5 there are three very important truths that will really impact our Father Story. If we engage with God as our Father in these three ways, it will change everything.

1. Listen to Him. “Let the wise hear…” vs. 5
* Truly engage with God as your Father and listen to what He says to you.

2. Learn from Him. “…and increase in learning…” vs. 5
* Listen with the heart of a student fully intending to learn more as He reveals truth to us.

3. Live Different. “…obtain guidance…” vs. 5
* Listen with the heart of a student to learn more, fully intending to live differently based on God’s guidance as a Father to us.

It’s Time To Talk To The Father About It

Chances are, there is something going on in your life today and you are handling it as “an orphan.” You are trying hard to figure it out on your own. Maybe you aren’t. You’ve possibly given up on it altogether and just accepted the fact that there is no hope and things will never change. Listen, I understand… I’ve been there a few times myself. I hate to admit that there was a time I was really mad at God. So, let me encourage you to find the time in the next 24 hours to go spend alone with “The Father” and talk to Him about the burdens you are carrying right now. And make sure to ask Him what He wants you to do as a next step. Listen carefully to “The Father” because He’s really looking forward to talking with you. And welcome back to “Son Camp.”

*Terry is not his real name in order to protect his privacy.

Why Your Most Meaningful Ministry Might Be Outside of The Church

Why Your Most Meaningful Ministry Might Be Outside of The Church

Jim and Jan met in college and got married after graduation. They had a couple of kids and eventually were introduced to a growing church in their community through some friends they met through their kids soccer team. Neither Jim nor Jan grew up in church but they were beginning to grow more curious about it and knew they wanted to raise their kids with strong values. After attending their friend’s church for a while they grew to understand the meaning of a personal relationship with Christ and both of them eventually accepted Christ and began to grow as new Christians. It wasn’t long before they were introduced to the concept of “ministry involvement.” People would ask, “Have you found a ministry yet in the church? What ministries are you guys interested in here at the church? Hey, you guys know that we need lots of help here in several ministries at the church!” So they went on a quest to learn about all the “ministry needs” in the church and picked one.

Fast forward a few years and catch up with Jim and Jan… the faithful church attending Christian couple who have been integrated into the church for several years now. They have a nice home in a safe neighborhood, they have some good friends with kids the same age as their own with similar values, and they have faithfully served in various ministries in the church. But something seems to be missing. They have created a safe haven for themselves and their family but they sometimes just feel so worn out running back and forth doing so many things at church in the name of ministry. And there’s another problem… they long to be connected to something meaningful. They can’t put their finger on it but there is an unrest and they dream of being able to do something that would be impactful, something that would be life-changing, something that feels really fulfilling and looks like things they read about in the Bible.

Sound familiar? Now, I’m not knocking the genuine needs for workers to function in many ministries within the church. I’ve been in full-time ministry myself since way back in the late 80’s. After all, I did a quick web search and found a long list of ministries listed on a few church websites. Each one of these ministries need workers.

Here are a few ministry opportunities that were listed on just a few church websites…

Welcome ministry, Worship ministry, Children’s ministry, Youth ministry, Usher ministry, Greeter ministry, Cleaning the church ministry, Set up crew ministry, Men’s ministry, Women’s ministry, Prayer ministry, Bus ministry, Kitchen team ministry, Counting the money ministry, Grounds crew ministry, Visitation ministry, Sunday school teacher/helper ministry, Nursery ministry, Deacon ministry, Choir, Orchestra, Singles ministry, Couples ministry, Senior saints ministry, College ministry, Small group ministry… well, you get the picture.

Here’s a thought, “What would happen if every Christian found a way to to have DEEP MINISTRY IMPACT in their community while still meeting the needs of their local church?” I don’t think it is an issue of serving in the church OR serving in the community… I think we need to make room for both.

Most of my readers know that I spent about two decades in church youth ministry and a few years ago God led me to begin a youth outreach ministry to unchurched youth. If you aren’t familiar with the story about how God redirected my ministry you can listen to an interview I did with Wayne Shepherd here https://kenturnerministries.org/radio-interview-first-person-wayne-shepherd/ on Moody Radio or read more about it here. https://kenturnerministries.org/a-window-into-juvenile-detention-ministry/

Here are a few rewards I have experienced by opening up to ministry outside the church:

  1. My Christian Life Has Been Rejuvenated. Ephesians 2:5 mentions how we are “quickened” or made alive as a result of our salvation. By ministering to those who don’t know Christ, I find great excitement in talking to them about who He is and how He has changed my life.
  2. There’s Not A Lot Of Competition. You will notice an unusual phenomenon in the church… sometimes several Christians are competing for ministry opportunities. “When will I get asked to sing, teach, lead, chair a committee, serve as a deacon, plan an important event…” Sometimes these thoughts literally steel all the joy from our Christian life! But there are so many needs outside the church and there’s room for many more people to connect and serve.
  3. It Feels Like I’m Doing What Jesus Was Talking About. James 1:27 says it plainly that pure religion, or could we say authentic faith, looks more like this… visiting the fatherless and widows in their time of need and keeping ourselves unstained from the world. There’s something very rewarding about knowing we are lined up with Jesus priorities of ministry.
  4. It Brings New Purpose To My Spiritual Growth. When you are talking with people regularly who don’t know much if anything about God or His word you are forced to answer their questions. Questions like, “If God really loves me then why is this happening in my life? If He is really real then how do you explain this? Can you tell me what God is really like? How has He changed your life? Why do you believe in Him?” Now, don’t let the questions scare you… I’ve found people really want honest answers but they don’t expect us to have ALL the answers all figured out. They just want honesty in a Christian friend who really cares about them.
  5. It Makes Service Within The Church More Meaningful. I promise you that you will sing with more joy in the church choir, you will bring greater enthusiasm to your role as a greeter, you will greet all your duties within the church with more heart if you are serving Him outside the church in a meaningful ministry.

Give me your feedback. What have been some of your greatest experiences in finding fulfilling ways to do ministry for the Lord? I’d enjoy your feedback in the comments section of this article. Like and share it to invite others into the conversation!

Unbelief and Hesitation

Unbelief and Hesitation

Being born in a non-Christian home, then seeing my parents accept Christ when I was ten years old gives me a certain perspective I’ve always been grateful for. I know the difference between life without Christ and life with Him. I saw the change in our home. It was a drastic change and impacted me deeply. After a few months of watching how God could change mom and dad, I was convicted and I was convinced He could do the same for me and I accepted Christ into my life at age eleven. It has been an amazing journey to follow God and see His plans unfold in my life but there have been a few times when His plan freaked me out and fear caused me to stop dead in my tracks.

The most important decision you will ever make in this life is the decision to accept (or not accept, which is actually to reject) Christ as your personal Savior. But becoming a Christian is the starting line and there are many steps ahead that lead to the “abundant life” Jesus talks about.

Recently, I have been reading and studying the book of Hebrews. There is a passage that addresses a significant glitch in our progress of growing with God. The glitch is explained in Hebrews 3:15-19. Here is the picture. The children of Israel had been wandering in the wilderness for decades and seeking the land of Canaan… the promised land. Once they found it, there were some within the group that were overcome with a lack of trust in God. They were afraid to enter in and they literally were standing at the threshold but were so overcome with the fear of unbelief that the passage in Hebrews says they died in the wilderness. The gruesome description states it this way, “But with whom was he grieved forty years? Was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcasses fell in the wilderness? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.”

Can you imagine following God for 40 years, eating manna and walking miles and miles and miles, sleeping in the wilderness, sacrificing and paying the price for the long awaited prize of living in the “promised land” and knowing you are standing in the doorway having completed 99.9% of the spiritual journey and… you stopped. Not only did you stop, you died in the wilderness and you never ever experienced the joy that was waiting for you. The joy that would have been all yours if you had taken just one more step of faith… one more step of obedience… one more movement that required you to fully trust God. That decision on that day made by so many of the children of Israel illustrates something significant about the spiritual journey you and I are on right now. And this is it. It is possible that the one thing that is keeping you from spiritual victory, living the abundant life Jesus talks about, experiencing fullness of joy and a peace that passes all understanding is simply your spirit of unbelief at the one critical moment God is ready to do something in your life that is life changing. It is that heart of hesitation you have caved in to so often when God was ready to show you a new piece of His divine plan and it freaked you out! You were scared and you stopped… dead in your tracks and you never moved another step toward it. It is what Hebrews calls the sin of unbelief. As much as we say that we are fully trusting God, fully relying on Him and fully obeying Him, the fact is that we have most likely missed some incredible God ordained opportunities by allowing fear and unbelief to cause us to hesitate. Today is a new day. Why not take some time today to be still and ask God for clear understanding about the next step He has for your life? And move toward it with the faith and courage that He will provide. And don’t ask Him for His plan, walk up to it and look at it and freeze. Go. Move. Take that one more step and be amazed at the victory God will pour into your spiritual life because you trusted Him. You believed. You obeyed. You found “rest” for your soul.

“While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation. For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses. But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcasses fell in the wilderness? And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.” Hebrews 3:15-19

He Came To The Bible Study For Food, And Left Spiritually Fed

He Came To The Bible Study For Food, And Left Spiritually Fed

*Randy was so mad! He slipped in to our Bible study after a last minute decision to come. He was mad at another guy who was controlling the TV in their room that evening in the detention center. He heard there was a Bible study that was about to start and he thought maybe there would be food. So he came… only for the food. He walked in to the room and it was obvious that he would be disappointed because there was no food. He sat down right next to me. We quickly jumped in to the Word and had a very lively study of the scripture and moment by moment his countenance changed. By the end of the study Randy was talking, asking questions and sharing insights about the text. He wanted to get something off his chest at the end. He said, “I came tonight because I was really mad at a guy in our unit and I thought this would be a way to get out and cool off… and I thought there would be food. But I have been fed spiritually and God has made it so clear that everything we studied tonight from the Bible was exactly what I needed. I’m so thankful God brought me here tonight.

In Christ,

Ken Turner

60 Givers, Reaching 100’s of Youth In 7 States

60 Givers, Reaching 100’s of Youth In 7 States

In 2012 the number of children confirmed to be victims of maltreatment in the USA was 603,854.

In 2013 the number of kids committed to state custody in Tennessee was 6954.

united_states copyIn 2014 I met more teens from more places that need the hope and strength that Christ provides than ever before. Through our High Impact Teen youth outreach ministry I have had the privilege to preach, teach, counsel and spend hours in one on one conversation with teens from Mississippi, Indiana, Tennessee, Georgia, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and North Carolina. I’ve also had the opportunity to develop volunteer ministry teams that are now reaching even more youth in Pennsylvania, Indiana, Georgia and Tennessee. God is placing on the hearts of caring, committed adults to join us in ministry and that opens unlimited doors to reach more youth as we move forward in the days ahead.

*Ronnie has big dreams but he also has significant obstacles to overcome. I met him in the gym during recreation time at a juvenile development facility in Tennessee. He has a speech problem and that hinders his communication skills significantly but after a while we had a long conversation about his dreams. He was about to turn eighteen and was soon to be released. He had submitted his college application to the school he really wanted to attend and was waiting to hear whether he would be accepted. He said, “I’m either moving on to a college campus or into a homeless facility… those are my two options.” His words stunned me. I imagined being eighteen and facing the challenges Ronnie was facing. But as we talked more about his situation he began to tell me about a local church that had taken an interest in him. He said, “This church has raised money to help me buy books, they have been collecting clothes and school supplies and when I get that acceptance letter from the college, I’ll be ready.” He did get accepted into that college and that is great news! I’ve been in touch with him this fall and he has faced some significant challenges already but through other Christian connections in the area, we are trying to help him one step at a time.

*Jimmy is in the seventh grade. We played ping pong together at French Camp Academy, a Christian boarding school for nearly three hundred middle and high school students in French Camp, Mississippi. He stated pointedly, “My parents both died… that’s how I ended up here.” But he’s doing fine because he’s surrounded by an incredible Christian family of staff and great house parents who love him and are guiding him each day. I’m speaking four times this school year at French Camp Academy on spiritual growth principles for these youth.

Eighty-five to ninety percent of the youth we minister to are fatherless. This year we have been able to reach more youth than ever before and new ministry doors continue to open in youth facilities to provide Bible studies and discipleship. Help Needed Ghana West Africa – Ken Turner Ministries

Help Needed Ghana West Africa – Ken Turner Ministries

HIT Book COVER - Because of the Hour copy_Page_1A few years ago I received a call from Missionary Fred Kearney. He explained how he had walked in to his office and found a book on his desk in his office in Ghana, West Africa. To this day he has no idea how it got there. It was a High Impact Teen Spiritual Journal for youth. My phone number was printed on the book so he called me. He said, “We really need something like this.

Our youth have very few resources to help them understand the Word and grow.” He told me about a youth conference he was holding and we put together a plan to get 75 HIT Journals to their youth. Many of my ministry friends donated to help raise funds to get the books to these youth from surrounding villages. Fred told me weeks later how God had used the HIT Journal to revive the hearts of many of their youth. They really grew through the structure and discipline of keeping a spiritual journal.

NOW THEY NEED MORE

Fred Kearney has been in Africa for many years and is now in need of 200 HIT Journals for his upcoming youth conference called “Because of the Hour.” The youth will learn to have a consistent devotional life, keep a spiritual journal, keep an organized prayer journal, keep sermon notes and develop in seven areas of discipleship.

For every $12 given a HIT Journal will be provided to the youth in Ghana, West Africa. We need sponsors and donors. Could you give today to help with this special project? I have submitted the files to the printer and am trusting the Lord to provide so we can make this investment in the youth of Ghana, West Africa.

BOTH Conference Flyer

We need a total of $2400 to fund HIT Journals for 200 youth in Africa. The youth conference begins July

30 so we need to raise the funds in the next few days. I hope you will prayerfully consider a gift.

*Note: Any funds raised over the amount needed will provide HIT Journals to fatherless youth we are reaching in the outreach to juvenile detention centers.

I Asked Tony Dungy About The Happiest Moment of His Life

I Asked Tony Dungy About The Happiest Moment of His Life

If you played in the NFL and won a Super Bowl… then coached in the NFL and won a Super Bowl… then became a best selling author and NFL TV analyst among many other successes… how would you define the happiest moment of your life? While working as a co-author on the book “The Jersey Effect”, I had the opportunity to ask Tony Dungy the question, “What was one of the happiest moments of your life?” And for the next four minutes he answered. The answer he gave me had a lot less to do with football, success, money or fame.

It was revealing and it might help you understand why you are happy today… or why you are not. Listen here:

Without anything but a prompting from God through Scripture, Ken Turner made a “cold call” on a jail where he assumed there was a teen who needed help.  After convincing the guard to let him in, he met an administrator who had been praying for someone just like Ken to come and help the young men in that detention center who were asking her to send someone like Ken.  The rest of the story is just as exciting and you’ll hear Ken tell it this week on FIRST PERSON.

turner-this-week-1Be sure to stay for the whole program as Ken tells the story of “Daniel”, a seemingly hopeless young man who was in jail and beyond reach– except for the reach of God’s love.

Be sure to visit Ken’s ministry website here where you will learn more of what you can do to help troubled, fatherless youth with the life-changing power of the Gospel.

$15 Provides The Gospel For Fatherless Youth

$15 Provides The Gospel For Fatherless Youth

You can make a difference that will last for eternity by giving to bring the gospel to hundreds of youth.

90% of the youth we serve are fatherless.

70% of youth in juvenile detention have committed “crimes of survival” meaning they are in trouble for choosing to do something to help them survive. Things such as stealing food because they are hungry or skipping school to try to support their family in poverty are common.

Over 300 teens have accepted Christ as Savior since our ministry started.

Your gift will fund a gift of a student Bible and my spiritual journal which teaches teens how engage with God through His word and really develop a personal relationship with Him. Our goal is to provide the gospel to 29 youth facilities in Tennessee and in Indiana.

$15 provides 1 Bible and 1 Spiritual Journal.
$75 provides 5 teens with a Bible and Spiritual Journal.
$150 provides for 10 teens, $300 provides for 20 teens, $1500 funds an entire detention facility of 100 youth!
