Knowing the Will of God
Four Misconceptions About God’s Will
• God’s will is only for the young.
• God’s will cannot be found.
• God’s will must lead to misery.
• God’s will is general and not specific.
1. You Must Be Willing to Do God’s will – Joshua 1:10-11
• Some are of the frame of mind that God must show us His will and then we can make a decision whether or not we will do it.
• God made you for a purpose and has a plan that He wants carried out in your life.
• Matthew 26:39 – “And He went a little further and fell on His face, and prayed saying, ‘O My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me, nevertheless not as I will bet as thou wilt’.”
• Luke 11:2 – “And He said unto them, ‘When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done.”
• John 4:34 – “ Jesus saith unto them, ‘My meat is to do the will of Him that sent me, and to finish His work’.”
• John 5:30 – “I can of mine own self do nothing…because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which has sent me.
• John 6:38 – “I came down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of Him that sent Me.”
• Before you can enjoy the full knowledge of God’s will for your life: there is a need for a willingness to do His will, no matter what His will might be.
2. God’s Will is Never Contrary to His Word – Joshua 1:8
• Joshua is taking over the awesome responsibility of leading the children of Israel.
• Moses was a multitalented man with 40 years experience in leadership and knowledge of the land of Egypt. He had walked closely with God.
• Joshua was basically untried; he needed a success formula to help lead this 2 _ million people.
• It was found in verse 8 – mediate on the Word of God
• The more you study and mediate on the Word of God and understand His ways, the more you will understand God’s will for your life.
3 . God May Use Circumstances to Show You His will – Joshua 1:1
• The circumstance in Joshua’s life was the death of Moses.
• There was a definite need and a place of service that was available to Joshua.
• God may use circumstances of life to help reveal His will to you.
• It is God that opens one door and closes another.
• If God has given you an opportunity, it may be an indication of His will.
• If God has closed the door then it is just as good an indication that it is not His will.
• It is important to be patient and wait on the place God has for you.
4. God’s Will is Accompanied by His peace – Joshua 1:5
• God’s peace always follows God’s will.
• Prov. 3:17 – “Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.”
• Is. 55:12 – “Ye shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace.”
• Circumstances do not solely determine the will of God.
• Advice will not solely determine the will of God.
• When you have found God’s will, there will be peace.
